Wildland Firefighter Fitness Trainer (January–April 2026)

Position Overview

Yukon First Nation Wildfire (YFNW), in partnership with SHA SHÄW Corporation, is seeking a Wildland Firefighter Fitness Trainer to design and deliver a structured, occupation-specific fitness training program that prepares community members for the 2026 wildland fire season.

The program, “Train Like a Wildland Firefighter,” focuses on developing the physical capability, endurance, and resilience needed for wildland fire operations. The primary objective of this program is to prepare participants to successfully complete the Wildland
Firefighter Physical Fitness Test (WFX-FIT)—the national standard for assessing readiness for wildland firefighting roles.

The Trainer will lead progressive, practical fitness sessions that introduce participants to the movement patterns, intensity, and physical challenges of wildland firefighting.

 

About the WFX-FIT Test

The WFX-FIT is a national physical fitness test that evaluates strength, endurance, and cardiovascular capacity. Participants complete the test in 14 minutes, 30 seconds or less, while wearing a weighted vest.

  1. Simulated Power Pump Carry (on back) – Lower body & core strength
  2. Simulated Power Pump Carry (off back) – Upper body & grip strength
  3. Hose Bag Over Ramp – Power, coordination & cardio endurance
  4. Simulated Charged Hose Pull – Upper/lower body pulling strength & stamina

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

·      Deliver 2–3 group training sessions per week in Haines Junction.

·      Create and implement a progressive, WFX-FIT–aligned fitness program.

·      Provide functional strength, endurance, and cardiovascular training.

·      Incorporate wildfire equipment into sessions (e.g., hose bags, pumps, hand tools).

·      Design movement-based conditioning that reflects real field operations.

·      Develop and submit weekly lesson plans to YFNW.

·      Support participants of varying fitness levels using safe and inclusive methods.

 

Program Supports Provided by YFNW

YFNW will supply training materials
commonly used in wildfire readiness, including:

·      Weight vests

·      Hose bags and hose

·      Hand tools (shovels, pulaskis, etc.)

These tools allow training to realistically mirror operational conditions.

 

Required Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate:

·      Certification and/or proven experience in fitness instruction, strength and conditioning, athletic coaching, or a related discipline.

·      Experience designing and leading group training programs.

·      Ability to adapt programming for a wide range of fitness levels.

·      Strong communication and motivational skills.

·      Ability to deliver all sessions in person in Haines Junction.

Assets:

·      Experience incorporating equipment-based or occupation-specific fitness training.

Commitment

·      Approximately 10 hours per week including planning, setup, and instruction.

·      Program runs January–April 2026.

·      Weekly lesson plans must be submitted to YFNW.

You will be employed as an Initial Attack Crew Leader for Yukon First Nations Wildfire (YFNW) and will report directly to your Regional Protection Officer or YFNW’s Operations Manager. Initial Attack Crew Leaders are expected to focus on positive leadership methods and be well organized. Candidates should have a professional, team-building mentality and be able to work with a diverse range of people of varying backgrounds and experience levels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Pursuant to ICS standards, the Initial Attack Crew Leader has 3-4 Crew Members reporting to them.
  • Arrives at work in a timely matter and is mentally and physically fit for work.
  • Leads and supervises a 3-4 person crew to complete tasks and accomplish goals on wildfire incidents, during training exercises and at the fire base.
  • Maintains a high level of physical fitness through daily fitness training to be prepared for sustained action on wildfire incidents and ensures that all other squad members do the same.
  • Completes necessary paperwork in the form of daily timesheets, incident reports, after action review forms and others.
  • Trains and develops skills and abilities of Crew Members.
  • Is expected to work long hours when needed – up to 18 hours per day.
  • Is expected to work for extended periods of up to 19 days away from home when needed.
  • Cleans and maintains personal gear and equipment daily.
  • Cleans and maintains fire base daily.
  • Wears the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing tasks to ensure the safety of themselves and those around them.

  • Proficiency in utilizing firefighting tools, including pumps, hand tools, and ground ignition devices.
  • Small engine operation and maintenance.
  • General bushcraft knowledge, orienteering, and radio operations.
  • Safe navigation on vehicles and helicopters.
  • Leadership and Command.

Upon completion of training, you’ll attain qualifications applicable throughout your career, including:

levels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise
    and lead a 20-person unit to complete tasks and accomplish goals on
    wildfire incidents, during training exercises and at the fire base.
  • Maintain
    a high level of physical fitness to be prepared for sustained action on
    wildfire incidents and ensures that all other Unit Crew personnel do the
    same.
  • Arrive
    at work on time prepared for work.
  • Act
    professionally and respectfully while on shift and off-hours while working
    on incidents. You are an ambassador for YFNW.
  • Complete
    necessary paperwork in the form of daily timesheets, incident reports,
    after action review forms and others as needed.
  • Assist
    with, and deliver, training modules and courses for members of the Unit
    Crew.
  • Deliver
    daily briefings to Unit Crew personnel including weather information,
    situation report and daily task assignments.
  • Ensure
    OHS safety processes are being met and followed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Pursuant to ICS standards, the Unit Crew Leader has 4-6 Crew Members reporting to them.

·        Arrives at work in a timely matter and is mentally and physically fit for work.

·        Leads and supervises a 4-6 person squad to complete tasks and accomplish goals on wildfire incidents, during training exercises and at the fire base.

·        Maintains a high level of physical fitness through daily fitness training to be prepared for sustained action on wildfire incidents and ensures that all other Crew Members do the same.

·        Participates in wildland fire training exercises for the Unit Crew.

·        Completes necessary paperwork in the form of daily timesheets, incident reports, after action review forms and others.

·        Trains and develops skills and abilities of Crew Members.

·        Facilitates and delivers training modules and courses for members of the Unit Crew at the direction of the Unit Crew Supervisor.

·        Is expected to work long hours when needed – up to 18 hours per day.

·        Is expected to work for extended periods of up to 19 days away from home when needed.

·        Cleans and maintains personal gear and equipment daily.

·        Cleans and maintains fire base daily.

·        Wears the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing tasks to ensure the safety of themselves and those around them.

·        Wears the appropriate uniform while on shift.

·        Is responsible for ensuring their crew’s assigned vehicle and equipment are clean and serviceable daily.

·        Maintains a running inventory of equipment and gear both on fire incidents and while at the fire base.

·        Acts professionally and respectfully while on shift and off-hours while working on incidents.

·        Maintains communications with Crew Leaders and Crew Members using a handheld radio.

Duties and Responsibilities when on a Fire:

Perform management tasks including, but not limited to:

o   Remote power water pump set up and operation,

o   Construction of control lines around perimeter of fire area using power saws, power pumps, hose, backpack pumps, and hand tools,

o   Hot spotting operations using power saws, power pumps, hose, backpack pumps, and hand tools,

o   Ignition operations in direct and indirect attack settings using ignitions devices such as fuses and drip torches

Qualifications:

  • S-230 Training or recognized equivalent.
  • ICS I-100 certification (ICS 200 Certificate recommended)
  • Has obtained applicable leadership courses (L-280, L-380, etc.)
  • Understands the FBP system (Fire Behavior Prediction)
  • Minimum WFX-fitness standard (14:30)

 

Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum education level that provides the skills to read, write and comprehend wildfire knowledge, and can understand written instructions.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must meet and maintain the Yukon WFM WFX-Fitness standards

·        Demonstrates an aptitude for leadership, organization, supervision, and communication.

Compensation:

Starting at $37.21 per hour based on experience.
